What is music therapy?

Music therapy in Australia is an allied health profession. Sessions are facilitated by a Registered Music Therapist (RMT) who has completed the required training and is registered with the Australian Music Therapy Association. Music therapists draw on an extensive body of research and incorporate a range of music making methods that are utilised within a therapeutic relationship to support each participant’s individual and unique health goals.  More information about music
therapy can be found at https://www.austmta.org.au/

Each session is customised to meet the needs of individual participants. Many types of music-based activities may occur including singing, music listening, instrument playing, song writing, using music software, musical appreciation and discussion, relaxation and even dancing! While sessions can be great fun, improve your mood and provide much needed emotional expression and support, they are primarily focussed on meeting specific health aims, which may include functional, physical, psychological, developmental, cognitive, emotional, social and communication goals.

No music skills or experience is required! Just bring your love of music and favourite songs, and we will work together to determine which musical activities match your interests and will assist you to meet your health goals. We also provide a range of musical instruments to use during sessions.

If you have an NDIS plan and are self or plan managed, you may be able to utilise some of those funds for music therapy with us. In some cases home-based aged care packages may also fund music therapy. We also welcome privately funded clients who wish to support their health through music.

Anyone who is interested in utilising music to support their health can do music therapy. For children, or adults with special needs, parents and carers are encouraged to attend and participate in the sessions.

We are a mobile service that comes to your home or facility. Sessions usually go for an hour.
